Supplementary election: Police assure voters of safety in Oyo

Police have assured residents of water-tight security at various polling units where the supplementary election has been scheduled to hold on Saturday in Oyo state.

Disclosing this to newsmen in Ibadan while parading 29 suspects held for various criminal offences, the State Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Williams said the Command would not condone any act of lawlessness during and after the conduct of the election in the affected areas.

He disclosed that more stringent and pre-emptive measures towards the protection of lives and property have been emplaced towards the overall attainment of the Exercise.

The Commissioner of Police added that residents shall experience Water-tight security across designated/participating Polling Units, wards, INEC Collation centres and facilities.

According to him, “the security architecture for the period in view shall be enhanced to accommodate intelligence driven Stop and search, Coordinated Raids of Flashpoints and black spots and intensive surveillance around persons of interest (Habitual criminals), critical infrastructures and public spaces.

“Only accredited voters will be permitted at Polling Units. Those without business are advised to stay clear

‘Also, vendors of food, alcohol and other consumables shall not be allowed to operate shops/stalls/stands near any polling units/wards as they could be converted as perfect points of negotiation for the act of vote buying.

“Post-election celebrations must be done with the highest sense of modesty, devoid of inciting utterances and provocative gestures that can lead to the eventual breakdown of law and order.

“Parents, guardians and other leaders wielding degrees of influence in the society must prevail on their children, wards, protégé against being used as cannon fodder in disrupting the electoral process and by extension the tranquil nature of the state.”

In another development, the Command has paraded 29 suspects including a couple for various criminal offences.

The suspects were picked up at various locations across 33 local government areas of the state.

They were arrested for offences ranging from kidnapping, murder, armed robbery and related vices.

The couple (names withheld) confessed to the crime of snatching motorbikes at various locations in the Ibadan metropolis.
