Thursday’s meeting of stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, to arrive at a consensus Chairmanship candidate, ahead of Saturday’s state congress of the party, again ended in a stalemate.
Caretaker Chairman, Oyo APC, Chief Akin Oke, had convened the meeting at the party secretariat, Ibadan, to resolve difficulties in zones arriving at consensus candidates for the state executive committee positions of the party.
The position of Chairmanship zoned to Oke-Ogun 1 was a special focus of the meeting with Isaac Omodewu (Itesiwaju), Abu Gbadamosi (Kajola), Yekeen Abolade (Iseyin) and Dele Akinleye (Itesiwaju) each still keen on being the consensus candidate.
When a report from Oke-Ogun 1 was received, stakeholders at the meeting were informed that there was no consensus candidate, though it indicated that one of the candidates was favoured.
With no clear-cut candidate and the four aspirants still keen on being the candidate, stakeholders at the meeting gave the Oke-Ogun 1 zone till 11 am on Friday to inform the party of their consensus jointly agreed upon by the four local government areas that make up the zone.
Asked what will happen if the zone is still unable to arrive at a consensus candidate, party sources said the elders of the party might be one to choose one out of the four aspirants deemed the best or Chairmanship might be zoned to another zone.
Though there were still concerns that there were still some zones that have not reached consensus on some other positions, stakeholders at the meeting noted that once that of the Chairmanship is sorted, that of other zones will fall in.
Though not entirely ruling out delegates going to the field at the congress, top party stakeholders, on Friday, maintained that the consensus option remains the most fancied.
Meanwhile, feedback on the Chairmanship issue is expected to be presented at a 3 pm meeting of party stakeholders with the Lawan Gambo led state congress committee from Abuja on Friday.
At the meeting, Gambo is also expected to officially unveil the delegates’ list.
At Friday’s meeting, party stakeholders had insisted on seeing the delegates’ list before proceeding with Saturday’s congress.
Though the delegates’ list is expected to be unveiled on Friday, party stakeholders insisted that acceptance of the list by party members will be crucial in deciding whether Saturday’s congress will hold or not.
