The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, expressed sadness on Tuesday over the death of an individual due to flooding that impacted several areas of Kosofe Federal Constituency in Lagos State.
Speaker Abbas also voiced concern that the flood had displaced over 2,000 people from their homes.
The Speaker called on relevant federal and state authorities to take immediate action to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
He urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to promptly provide necessary interventions for the displaced.
Speaker Abbas commended the Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Kafilat Ogbara, for offering shelter to the displaced individuals from her constituency.
The flood had affected a school building, which turned into a residential structure with 500 rooms known as Agboye Estate on Oduntan Street, Ketu, in the Ikosi-Isheri LCDA of Lagos State. The building collapsed on Saturday following hours of heavy rainfall across the state.
In response to the disaster, Hon. Ogbara reportedly donated a 10-bedroom duplex with boys’ quarters, originally serving as her constituency office, to the affected families, particularly children, for temporary shelter.
The Speaker appreciated Hon. Ogbara’s generous gesture and commended her for leading by example.
