Sokoto State government has set up 575 health facilities across the 23 local government areas of the state to tackle malaria among its citizens.
The state commissioner for health, Dr Ali Inname, disclosed this at a press conference marking world malaria day celebration, on Monday, in Sokoto.
Inname noted that government officials, non-governmental organisations, community-based groups, traditional rulers, security agencies and journalists were included in the committees.
He frowned at people misusing mosquito nets specifically to safeguard people’s health, adding that investigation revealed that some people smuggle the nets to neighbouring countries while some use them for fishing in the river.
He said that the state government is collaborating with USAID’s Malaria Illumination Initiative (PMI) to deliver 450,000 to 600,000 doses of malaria medicine to 575 supported health facilities in 23 local government areas of the state.
He added that the state procured N1.5 million doses of malaria medicine and 50,000 units of insecticide mosquito nets for free distribution to facilities in the state.

He said other efforts included strengthening malaria vector control activities along with statewide fumigation exercises in all the 244 political wards in 2021.
” We established malaria advocacy working groups for awareness, sponsored the training of LGAs supervisors, development of a micro plan for 2022 and trained 45 laboratory scientists as malaria microscopic at 2022,” Inname said.
Earlier in his remarks, the Director-General, Sokoto State malaria control agency, Alhaji Muslihu Gobir, said Sokoto was the first state to establish a malaria agency in the country as many states have malaria control programme desks.
Gobir said that Sokoto had achieved 70 per cent of electronic data collection and reporting in the state, adding that malaria treatment is always available at all times.
He commended donors and inter-ministerial support that ensured maximum success in all the programmes.
Mr Benedict Onoja of USAID/PMI and other representatives of Breakthrough Action, BUA Group expressed continued commitments to supporting malaria control programmes in the state.
The commissioner further launched the distribution of a comprehensive book on how residents would easily access malaria treatment in all 23 local government areas.
