Plateau State Police Command has arrested a retired 80-year-old soldier, Peter Ashom, for the defilement of an eleven-year-old girl at Gyel in Jos South local government area of Plateau State.
Speaking with newsmen shortly after parading the suspect at the state headquarters of the command, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Okoro Julius Alawari, said the 80-year-old man lured the girl into his room under the pretence of sending her on an errand anytime she goes to sell groundnut.
The Commissioner of Police said the suspect forcefully had knowledge of the girl and threatened to kill her if she told anyone of the incident, adding that the man was apprehended by the police following a complaint by the girl’s parents.
Speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, the suspect, who claimed to be a retired soldier, confessed the crime and stated that he was pushed into it by the devil, adding that it was his first time committing such a crime.
“I was the only one at home when the girl entered my room with her sister. I sent the two of them to buy something for me, but it was only the girl who returned to deliver the message. I don’t know what came upon me. I grabbed her and forcefully raped her.
“I have never done anything like this before; this is my first time; it is the devil that pushed me into this. I am appealing to the girl’s parents and the police to have mercy on me. I will not do anything like this again. This is my first time doing something like this,” he pleaded.
However, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Julius Alawari, stated that the case is still under investigation and will be charged to court upon completion of due investigation.
