A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) known as Open Hands Tech has invented an application that would allow direct communication between charity organisations and the poor via text messaging as a way of preventing the shortchanging of the less privilege by third parties.
Speaking for Open Hands Tech, Dipo Smart told the media on Tuesday in Abuja That even though poverty level is high in the country, another factor that is worsening the situation is the diversion of help or relief materials meant for displaced persons or people in need by government officials or other third parties.
According to him, “in Nigeria a while back, there was an allegation against a government official who allegedly spent funds meant for displaced persons amongst other things. Often times the problems with providing relief to the needy isn’t the unavailability of resources, rather it is the swiftness of service to these areas and persons that acts as a cog in the wheel of progress of these organisations that provides help and relief workers”.

“To combat societal problems and help the needy without succumbing to the clutches of corruption and its attendant problems, its important that mechanism(s) be put in place to make sure that the necessary help provided gets to the right quarters”.
He explained that the technology created by Open Hands Tech is done as an application on cell phones to allow people going through challenges to send texts, and get an instant interactive reply where such a person could find temporary housing, food, affordable health care, and drug treatment nearby from organizations ready to help. What Open Hands Tech seeks to do is provide an avenue where people in need can get help by real time interaction with aid and relief workers within their vicinity.
Dipo said “With this tool at the disposal of persons in need, gone are the days when resources are underutilised and abused,
He explained further that “the technology will help aid organisations streamline aid activities to areas where they are more needed as well as edge out corrupt persons while providing succour to those in need.
“With more support, the approach created by Open Hands Tech can create a community of relief providers to a community of needy persons thereby unifying efforts aimed at developing and providing succor to persons in need by NGO’s. Also, the approach embarked on by Open Hands Tech would help establish a verifiable database for further recourse while trying to appraise efforts aimed at tackling societal ills” he stated.
