POLITICAL candidates for various elective positions in Lagos state for the 2019 general elections have pledged total commitment to the implementation of the Goal 6 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG6) immediately they are sworn into office after their electoral victory.
This position was made known at the VOTE4WASH campaign pledge card signing event at various parts of Lagos over the weekend.
The VOTE4WASH campaign put in place by Connected Development, a Non-governmental organization committed to tracking government spending at the grassroots was supported by WaterAid Nigeria to see to the effective implementation of GOAL 6 of the SDGs which is Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) ahead of the 2030 deadline.
The VOTE4WASH campaign provided a platform for the political candidates to familiarize themselves with the current state of the WASH sector in Lagos and how they can play a part in addressing the scourge of absence of clean water and adequate sanitary facility in the state and its numerous communities by signing a pledge cards that commits them to the promise.
The pledge signing event started with Hon. Jumoke Fakoya, the Senatorial Candidate of the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) for Lagos East Senatorial District at the Ikorodu Local Government Secretariat of the party.

She expressed her happiness with the VOTE4WASH campaign and pledged her readiness to support the achievement of SDG6 through effective legislation at the National Assembly after her electoral victory after narrating her experience at Ibeju-Lekki while on campaign.
She stated that she was confronted with the poor state of water supply and sanitation facilities in the community which she described as appalling and unacceptable. She promised to make the SDG6 an integral part of her deliverables after the coming election and appreciated CODE and WaterAid for instituting a laudable project like the #VOTE4WASH campaign.
On his part, the Lagos state Governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Mr. Babatunde Gbadamosi expressed his joy with the VOTE4WASH project especially as it resonates with one of his electoral promise which is provision of clean and drinkable water for all Lagosians as he believes that it is an important necessity for human existence.
He appreciated the timeliness of the campaign with a promise to provide clean water for all Lagosians and signed the pledge cards with a promise to abide by his words when he is elected in March 2019.
The Assistant project manager of Connected Development, Mr. Nwachukwu Ani, described the VOTE4WASH campaign as need driven and solution focused one to seek to the implementation of SDG6 ahead of the 2030 deadline.
He was accompanied on the visits by Adesina Tosin Nathaniel, Lagos state Chapter Lead of Connected Development and VOTE4WASH Volunteer in Lagos.
The pledge cards was also signed by the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for Lagos East Senatorial District, Princess Folashade Oyefusi, the ADC candidates for Ikorodu Constituency 1 and 2 Mr. Adeyemi Odofin and Miss Islamiat Adeola Oyebanjo, the candidate of the PDP for Kosofe state constituency, Mr. Moyosore Ogunlewe and the PDP Candidate for Eti-Osa Federal Constituency, Mr. Babajide Obanikoro.
The signing of pledge cards continues with candidates of other political parties.
