Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, has highlighted critical lessons from the recent incident in Onitsha, where a 21-year-old apprentice allegedly killed his master with a pestle.

Ikenga said the regrettable incident, which occurred in the commercial city of the state, has brought several important issues to the fore, stressing the need for proactive measures within families, workplaces and communities.

According to him, early intervention is crucial. Warning signs such as drug abuse, theft and repeated misconduct should never be ignored.

He noted that timely steps, including counselling, rehabilitation or community mediation, can prevent situations from escalating into violence.

He further stated that employers must balance discipline with structured support.

While correction is necessary, involving guardians, community leaders or appropriate authorities when problems persist may help reduce tension and potential risks.

The police spokesperson also identified substance abuse as a major risk factor, warning that drug use can impair judgment, increase aggression and fuel criminal behaviour.

He emphasised that addressing substance abuse early through professional help is critical.

Ikenga added that homes that double as workplaces should establish clear boundaries and safety measures, particularly where apprentices or domestic staff reside on the premises.

He called for stronger collaboration between parents, guardians and law enforcement agencies when dealing with serious behavioural issues involving young people.

The incident, he said, underscores the need for vigilance, proactive conflict management and stronger social support systems across society.
