Piqued by the rampant cases of rape across the country, Plateau State House of Assembly has called for stringent measures and punishment to tackle the menace of rape to serve as a deterrent to other rapists.
The only female member of the House representing Jos north-west, Esther Dusu of the PDP who raised the matter at the plenary on Wednesday strongly condemned the rampant cases of rape involving minors and adults in the country and the way it was being handled by the law enforcement agencies.
She posited that in Plateau state alone quite a number of people have been arrested for rape-related cases and nothing has been done by the security agencies adding that the issue of rape deserves government attention and proper legislation to fight the menace.
The lawmaker, therefore, called on the state government to enact a law to deal with the perpetrators of the ignoble crime and enjoined parents and guardians to properly counsel their female children on how to avoid the bait often used by the undesirable elements to lure them.
Supporting the motion on rape, the deputy Speaker Saleh Yipmong (APC) said appropriate agencies must take serious action and stringent measures against those responsible for the act and suggested that bails should not be granted to rapist and urged the House to mandate the State Government and the Ministry of Justice to work towards enbling law that would protect any woman from being raped.
In a related development, Plateau State House of Assembly has Passed 6 out of the 63 bills so far presented before it amongst which was the 2020 appropriation Bills which was passed into law in December 2019.
Chairman House Committee on information Dasun Philip Stated this Wednesday while briefing Journalist on the activities of the State assembly in the past one year adding that members of the house have remained Steadfast in pursuant of the mandate given to them.
He commended the leadership style of the house led by the speaker Hon. Nuhu Abok adding that the unanimous decision of the house to donate half of their May salary to tackle COVID-19 to boost the Palliative of the state government was a landmark decision.
