A serving soldier and a suspected pirate have died during a fierce clash between soldiers attached to Operation Delta Safe (OPDS) and suspected sea pirates in Tuomo, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State.
The incident, which has ruffled residents of the community and its neighbours, reportedly took place at about 10:30 p.m, on Monday.
Sources said the pirates, in a speed boat, drew the first blood by launching an attack on soldiers manning a checkpoint in order to confiscate their arms and ammunition but were fiercely repelled by the soldiers.
Besides the killed pirate and soldier, one of the hoodlums was reportedly disarmed and arrested during the melee.
Although the authorities of OPDS could not be reached for immediate reaction, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Delta State Police Command, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident.
“Yes, a soldier died while one of the pirates was killed; one locally made shotgun recovered,” he told our reporter on Tuesday.
