The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has commended the Faculty of Nursing Sciences at Bowen University, Iwo, for its high production of productive nursing graduates in Nigeria.
Ali Mohammed Goniri made this remark at the induction ceremony for the 63 nursing graduating students of the Bowen University 2023 set, held last Friday.
Goniri, representing the council during the induction, noted that Bowen Nursing graduating students have been performing brilliantly well in various nursing professional certificate examinations since the university began presenting students for those examinations.
He also emphasised that Bowen University is one of the fastest-growing universities in the country with adequate teaching, research, and human capital facilities, especially in the health sciences programmes.
He said, “The council is proud of the products Bowen University is producing for the health sector. I have learned that Bowen University started its Bachelor of Nursing Sciences less than 10 years ago, and the university has consistently produced reliable Bachelor of Nursing graduates for NMCN’s induction.
It is encouraging to note that, apart from their brilliant performances in all their professional certificate examinations, Bowen University nursing graduates are excelling in the field.
“Nigeria will need more institutions like Bowen University to produce seasoned nursing graduates that the country can be proud of in the health sector.
My advice to these new inductees is that they should not leave the country but rather contribute their quota to the health sector development process in Nigeria.”
Speaking in a similar vein, Mrs. Yetunde Kolade from the National Association of Nigerian Nursing and Midwifery, Osun State, confirmed the efficacy and standard of Bowen University’s output and their performances in the health sector.
She noted that godliness and excellence in the lives of Bowen graduating students distinguish them from graduates of other universities.
“We have many of them in our various hospitals in the state, and they are very good to reckon with.”
Professor Adesola Ogunfowokan, who delivered the induction lecture entitled “Revolutionising Health Care Delivery: The Contribution of Artificial Intelligence to Decision Making in Nursing Practice,” called on the Nigerian government to invest in artificial intelligence technology to boost healthcare services in the country.
She emphasised that artificial intelligence is a global phenomenon that Nigeria should embrace for efficiency in the health sector.
According to her, the system would reduce the workload, especially of nurses in hospitals.
She condemned the use of auxiliary nurses in Nigeria and appealed to authorities in the health sector to standardise the training of the nursing profession in the country.
The Dean of the Faculty of Nursing Sciences at the university, Professor Deborah Esan, stated that Bowen University began presenting Bachelor of Nursing Sciences graduates for induction in 2020, and this year marked the fourth edition of the induction, with 63 graduates presented for the exercise.
She appreciated the parents and congratulated the inductees for their success stories, noting that the faculty’s programmes are fully accredited, based on academic excellence, to be a foremost nursing educational institution that prepares first-rated professional nurses who will translate godliness, excellence, and scientific knowledge into nursing practise, leadership, and global service.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Jonathan Babalola, while congratulating the new inductees, stated that Bowen University would continue to produce graduates that would transform the nation in the near future.
“We will continue to overhaul the system where necessary and maintain good policies. In a nutshell, our core values—godliness, entrepreneurship, excellence, innovation, and social responsibility—form the basis of university education at Bowen University.
Our students are groomed in their fields to be self-sufficient, productive, and relevant to their immediate environment and at the global level.
We train our students according to the sector’s needs, enabling them to fit into any industry.”
