Zonal Director, National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Ibadan zonal office, Mr Raphael Akpan has tasked broadcasters on professionalism and internalisation of the NBC codes to guide their practice.
According to Akpan, professionalism and adherence to the NBC codes will engender broadcasters seeing themselves as agents of peace and not harbingers of chaos in the society.
Speaking during the graduation ceremony for the pioneer set of trainees of the Splash FM Media Academy held in Ibadan, on Friday, Akpan further tasked broadcasters to verify the source of their news rather than dishing out fake news all in the race to be first to break the news.
Akpan said: “Broadcasters have to be professional. We have the NBC codes which spell out the minimum standards required by every broadcaster in Nigeria. Simply adhere to the provisions in the NBC codes.
“Before the broadcaster goes on air, he or she should question how what is to be said will impact on the listener, on the society. Is it going to cause problems, chaos, or bring peace?
“When you have that in mind, you know you are agents of peace in the society and when you always do that, you will be doing well.
“My advice to every broadcaster in Oyo state is to be professional in everything they do, in terms of programmes, adverts and everything done on air. Follow the rules that guide everything you do and by so, we will have peace.”
Earlier, General Manager (Operations), West Midlands Communications, Mr Tunde Olawuwo disclosed that the 49 graduates had been trained on presentation and elocution, programming, content development, journalism, production and digital media.
Olawuwo charged them to embrace self-growth and be diligent wherever they find themselves.
In her remarks, renowned broadcaster, Mr Edmund Obilo urged the graduates to be deliberate in programming and plot their way to the top amid the crowd.
Another known broadcaster, Mrs Titilayo Akinsola tasked the Splash FM Media Academy graduates with diligence, punctuality, seriousness on the job and being keen on making their name first not chasing money.
Recounting their six-week experience at the academy, graduates to include Bode Adefioye, Adekoya Mayowa and Ogunleye Aderonke avowed that the courses taken opened their eyes to the rigour that goes behind the scenes before broadcasters come on air.
Personalities to include the Chairman, West Midland Communications, Chief Adebayo Akande were present to present certificates of completion to the 49 graduates of the academy.
