Former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has criticised former First Lady Patience Jonathan, stating that she should be in prison instead of her 15 domestic workers, who have been detained since 2019 over missing jewelry allegedly worth N750 million.
Reports indicate that the former First Lady allegedly kept 15 of her domestic staff locked up in Bayelsa State’s Okaka Correctional Centre for over six years on unproven robbery allegations.
Reacting to this, Sowore took to his verified X account questioning how the former President’s wife acquired jewelry worth such an amount.
He wrote, “Former Nigerian First Lady Patience Jonathan has detained 15 domestic staff members for over six years while awaiting trial for allegedly stealing N750m worth of jewelry from her.
“Where did she get the funds to purchase jewelry valued at N750 million?”
He further condemned the situation, stating that Nigeria appears to be the only country where individuals accused of looting public funds have the audacity to arrest others for allegedly taking a portion of what they themselves looted.
“Nigeria appears to be the only country where alleged public treasury looters have the audacity to arrest others accused of stealing a portion of the funds they themselves looted from the public treasury,” he added.
Vowing to fight for the release of the detained workers, Sowore insisted that justice must be served.
“We must do everything to get them released from unjustified prosecution. Patience Jonathan should be the one in prison,” he declared.
