Minimising risks associated with oral s3x

ORAL s3x used to be a taboo subject, but these days, it has become a common form of s3xual activity generating growing interest. Many people, including married couples, even of the often conservative Christian faith, have developed taste for oral s3x pleasure. It is therefore good for such “converts” to advise as to risks associated with it. Let them know that what is sweet, also has the potential to kill, if not on the immediate, it may happen in the long run.

For the purpose of emphasis, oral s3x means using your mouth, lips or tongue to stimulate your partner’s genitals or anus. Both men and women can give their partner oral s3x.  Oral s3x is also variously called such names as – ‘going down’, ‘blow job’, ‘giving head’, ‘69’ or ‘rimming’ (and a lot more). Medically, oral s3x has names too: oral s3x on a woman (the vagina, vulva and clitoris) is called cunnilingus, while on a man (the penis), it is called fellatio. If oral s3x involves the anus, it’s called anilingus.

As discovered, oral s3x can be a natural and enjoyable part of s3x between consenting partners. Adventurous couples have discovered by experiment that oral s3x can be given or received  as part of other s3xual activity (like vaginal or anal intercourse) or on its own. However, there are high risks associated with it.

The following are some of such risks that must be considered by engaging and interested persons. I feel a lot of people are really not properly guided about the associated risks.

The risks of oral s3x

Many experts say oral s3x is not safe s3x. It may be ‘safer s3x’ than unprotected genital s3x in that you won’t get pregnant from oral s3x alone, but unprotected oral s3x still carries the significant risk of catching or passing on s3xually transmissible infections (STIs).

Because oral s3x usually involves sucking or licking your partner’s genitals or anus, you’re likely to come into contact with genital fluids or faeces and this puts you at risk of many STIs: which include genital warts, genital herpes, gonorrhoea, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS, syphilis, pubic lice.

Generally, one is more at risk of catching an STI from oral s3x if:

*You give rather than receive oral s3x – because you’re more likely to be exposed to genital fluids

*You have cuts, sores or ulcers in your mouth at the time

*You don’t use protection.

Another risk of oral s3x is strain on a relationship, especially if one of the partners does not enjoy it or has concerns about it. One partner may have anxiety about their oral s3xual performance or what their partner will think of them during oral s3x. Oral s3x may make one partner feel under the other partner’s control. These are all important issues to resolve before introducing oral s3x into your relationship.

Next week, we will consider the various ways of minimising these associated risks. But at that, let us be guided about the concern of experts that oral s3x can be extremely dangerous.
