A group of lawyers has condemned activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju’s petition seeking a visa ban against Assistant Commissioner of Police Olumuyiwa Adejobi and his family.
The petition, sent to several foreign embassies, alleged human rights violations, but the lawyers argue that Adeyanju’s actions are unconstitutional, unethical, and professional misconduct.
According to the lawyers, Adeyanju’s actions breach key legal provisions, including the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners, 2023.
They criticised Adeyanju for bypassing Nigerian judicial institutions and seeking punitive measures through foreign diplomatic channels, which is inconsistent with the due process of law.
The lawyers described Adeyanju’s actions as “astonishing” and “malicious,” and called on senior members of the legal profession to investigate the matter and possibly sanction Adeyanju to safeguard the integrity of the profession.
They emphasised that Adeyanju’s actions tarnished the integrity of the legal profession and undermined the rule of law and social justice.
