The Lagos State University (LASU) Ojo, on Wednesday, recorded the first master’s degree student in the history of the 29-year-old university to be graduated with a perfect score of 5.0 Cumulative Gradient Point Average (CGPA).
It also recorded the first undergraduate student to be graduated with the highest CGPA of 4.97 since the inception of the school.
Both new graduates were the cynosure of all eyes at the 25th convocation ceremony of the university held on Wednesday as they won several awards.
A total of 112 students made First Class in the set which is also the highest so far in the history of the university at the event, which saw a total of 7, 232 students graduating with diplomas, first degrees, postgraduate diplomas and master’s degrees as applicable.
In their separate valedictory speeches, Adekunle Ogunkoya, a Master’s degree holder, who studied Religions and Peace Studies as well as Damilare Olowu, who studied Mechanical Engineering, said their achievements were rewards of hardwork, diligence and great sacrifice, starting from when they were in 100- level.
They said the journey was very challenging but they had to give it all it takes to graduate as a champion both academically and morally, urging other students who are still in school to also pursue their studies with all seriousness.
Damilare Olowu, for example, disclosed that his father, who is a lecturer also in LASU, played a key role in his academic excellence.
He said his father usually set a high standard for him and with a good prize if he could meet such every semester in order to ensure he maintains good grades throughout his studies.
“And the approach worked out as I know he would certainly fulfil his promise once I achieve the target,” he stressed.
Damilola, however, was full of gratitude to his father, mother and siblings for all the encouragement he said they gave him throughout his studentship in LASU.
In her remark earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Prof Ibiyemi Olatunji- Bello, said LASU all the graduands had been thoroughly trained to become positive change agents in the society.
She reaffirmed that her administration had designed six-strategic and sustainable plans as areas of focus to make the university the best brand in the West African sub-region in no distant time.
She said she and her team would ensure they are not derailed from achieving the set goal.
