The residents said wearing a singlet for more than a day under the harsh weather could cause serious body odour and rashes.
Mr John Okolo, a trader, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the prevailing weather would cause people to sweat.
Okolo said because of the heat and its effect on the body, men needed to be changing their singlet and shorts on daily basis.
“If one should wear a singlet that has absorbed sweat the previous day, it will surely smell because the human body does not produce perfume to neutralize the odour.
“Some people sweat a lot, so they do not have to wear the same singlet or clothes the next day,’’ he said.
Also, Mr Nicholas Igwebuike, a civil servant, said that it was unhygienic to wear one singlet for days.
“I have a dozen singlet; so I wear one every day. It is unhygienic for one to wear a singlet for days or one week.
“It is the singlet that absorbs the sweat from the body and it protects the shirt. It needs to be kept clean.
“Because some are in the habit of wearing one singlet for days, they smell inside public transport as if they had not had their bath for a long time.
“Personal hygiene is very vital to our lives,’’ he said.
A businesswoman, Mrs Idowu Martins, also told NAN that the practice of wearing one singlet daily was dependent on the individual.
“Some people may want to conserve what they spend on buying water on daily basis.
“It may also be that they do not want to wash the singlet regularly so that it does not tear.’’
For Mr Sunday Adebola, a student of the Lagos State University (LASU), anybody who fails to wash his singlet everyday is a dirty person.
“They do not have any excuse not to keep themselves clean; some people are naturally dirty as they will wear a dress for days before changing,’’ he said.
