
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday acknowledged receipt of petition against Senator Dino Melaye representing Kogi-West senatorial district, .
A group led by Mr. Olowo Cornelius from Ijumu local government had stormed INEC secretariat on Wednesday to submit collated signatures from the 7 local councils areas in Kogi-west senatorial district, as part of statutory process for the recall of Senator Melaye.
Cornelius told newsmen that the signatories were from the seven local government areas of Ijumu, Kabba/ Bunnu
and Mopamoro. Others are Lokoja, Yagba west and east in Kogi west senatorial zone.
INEC in a statement made available to newsmen and signed by National Commissioner and Member, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mallam Mohammed Haruna, disclosed that the Commission had since conveyed receipt of the letter to Senator Melaye.
INEC further disclosed that it would soon commence verification of registered in the Kogi-West senatorial district.
The statement read in part: “The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) held its regular weekly meeting today and considered the petition submitted by some registered voters from Kogi-West Senatorial District to kick start the process of recalling Senator Dino Melaye.
“In accordance with the INEC guidelines for the recall of members of the National Assembly, the Commission has formally acknowledged the receipt of the petition to the petitioners’ representatives and has conveyed a letter notifying Senator Melaye of our receipt of the petition.
“The next step is to verify that the petitioners are registered voters in the Kogi-West Senatorial District.
“INEC will, on the 3rd of July, 2017, issue a public notice stating the day(s), time, location and other details for the verification exercise.’’
