The appointment of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Professor Nentawe Yiltwada, as the new National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has sparked jubilation among APC supporters in Jos, the capital of Plateau State.
Professor Nentawe Yiltwada was the gubernatorial candidate of the APC in the 2023 governorship election in Plateau State and was declared the winner of the election at the Appeal Election Petition Tribunal before the Supreme Court overturned the judgement in favour of the incumbent Governor, Caleb Mutfwang of the Peoples Democratic Party.
This is also the second time someone of Plateau extraction has been appointed as the National Chairman of a political party, after the pioneer National Chairman of the PDP, the late Chief Solomon Lar.
The moment news of his appointment filtered into the state, members of the party abandoned their daily activities and trooped into the streets of Jos and its environs to celebrate.
The jubilant crowd, numbering in the hundreds, were the cynosure of all eyes in places like Bauchi Road and Yandun-Wada.
Meanwhile, the state chapter of the APC, in a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Shittu Bamaiyi, said Plateau State has achieved another milestone in its political history and development by producing the National Chairman of the APC through a unanimous endorsement by the National Executive Committee, the highest organ of the party.
The statement noted that the new chairman, barely nine months into office as a minister, had already won the hearts of Nigerians and members of the international community due to his outstanding performance.
“Surely, his outstanding performance as a member of the Federal Executive Council, integrity, capacity, and pedigree might have been the contributory factors in making him the ultimate choice by the power brokers and members of the National Executive Committee of the party.
“For the President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to have opted for Professor Nentawe among other contending interests and political juggernauts from the North Central zone, it is not only instructive but also shows the absolute trust and confidence the President has in the Minister to effectively pilot the affairs of the APC in the face of daunting challenges in the political space of the country.”
The party added that the choice of Professor Nentawe as Acting National Chairman of the APC is a recognition and appreciation of his capacity and competence, adding that the choice also marks a watershed and an inspiring awakening of confidence in the people of Plateau State, which requires reciprocity from the people.
The people of Plateau State, particularly APC supporters, will remain ever grateful to President Tinubu for picking one of their own to occupy such an exalted position and reiterate their unshaken resolve to always support him.
While congratulating Professor Nentawe on the rare recognition, the APC chapter wished him a fruitful and eventful tenure and also prayed that he would do the state proud in the discharge of his official responsibilities.
