THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in the early hour of Monday, adjourned collation of Kano governorship election results temporarily over an alleged attack on collation centre of Nasarawa local government in the early hours of Monday at about 1.30 am.
Commenting over the incident, the Kano governorship election presiding officer Prof. B.B. Shehu together with the Resident Electoral Commissioner Prof. Riskuwa Shehu announced the decision.
The decision was taken after it was reported that the state deputy governor, Nasir Yusuf Gawuna , Commissioner for Local Government, Sule Garo and Chairman of Nasarawa Local Government, Lamin Sani, allegedly attacked the venue of the results collation with suspected thugs and attempted to destroy the results.
However, it would be recalled that 43 local government results have been released out of the 44, in which the candidate of PDP, Alhaji Kabir Abba Yusuf, is leading in the state and prior to the attack at the centre at the early hours of Monday.
Nasarawa local government result was the only one being awaited for collation.
Prof. B.B. Shehu then urged stakeholders at the state INEC collation centre to exercise patient over the incidents as they needed to go into a meeting over the issue and reconvene shortly.
Meanwhile the Police have detained the deputy governor Nasir Yusuf Gawuna , Commissioner for Local Government, Sule Garo and Chairman of Nasarawa Local Government, Lamin Sani at the state CID over the incident.
Speaking to Journalists at the Police headquarters, former Kano State governor and Senator representing Kano Central, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who came with his supporters expressed disappointment over the alleged action of those arrested.
His words, “This is a sad situation as these are people that are supposed to preach peace to the youths.”
