The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has donated water treatment chemicals to the Borno State Government to support the state’s water treatment plants after the Alao Dam collapse, which resulted in a cholera outbreak in the state.
Speaking in Maiduguri on Thursday, the ICRC Deputy Head of Sub-delegation in the Maiduguri office, Diana Japaridze, said the donation was triggered by September’s flood, which affected many communities in the state.
She explained that the donation includes 540 drums of chlorine, 3,600 bags of lime, and 9,450 bags of aluminium sulphate, valued at 586.8 tonnes.
Japaridze, represented by the Head of Sub-delegation Serge Zogg, stated, “This intervention delivers immediate relief, restores essential services, and builds long-term community resilience.”
The chemicals will provide a three-month supply for Maiduguri Water Treatment Plant, Alhamduri Water Works, and other facilities.
Japaridze highlighted the ICRC’s humanitarian efforts, including the restoration of family links, distributing essential items to displaced families, and health promotion activities due to the protracted conflict in the region.
ICRC supports five primary healthcare centres, mobile clinics, and installed water fetching points at Gubio Camp. Japaridze expressed pleasure that the donation will improve access to clean drinking water for Maiduguri communities.
Receiving the donation, Borno Commissioner of Water Resources, Alkali Goni, commended the ICRC for its support, saying the donation of the chemicals to the state government is timely.
Goni, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Modu Sanda, said the state government will use the chemicals to provide clean water to people in the state, particularly after the recent flooding which resulted in a cholera outbreak in the state.
