Government should not control the media

Government has no business in the media after the issuance of the licence to operate the media stations, as long as the stations follow the principles laid down by the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC).

US President, Donald Trump, recently doubled down on freedom of speech, which has been considered an apt policy that actually works in favour of journalists in the United States of America.

A government-owned media station is an instrument for politicians to wage war against the opposition.

Government radio and television station hardly ever criticises the ruling party regardless of their wrong conduct in governance! It is unprofessional for the government to be selecting the kind of news to broadcast to the members of the public.

Any media that gatekeeps information that is beneficial to the masses has violated the rules and regulations of the profession. Government should allow the media to stand on its own so that it can professionally thrive.

The BBC is well known all over the world simply because of the autonomous power given to it to operate.

The Nigerian media industry should be given the same autonomy to practise so as to get the world’s recognition.
