FUOYE to commit over N200m for research, innovative programmes annually ― VC

New FUOYE VC abayomi Fasina

The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University, Oye Ekiti(FUOYE), Professor Abayomi Fasina, has disclosed that the university is targeting between N200 and N300 million to pursue research programmes and innovations annually.

The professor of soil science stated that any university that can’t place high premium on research is dead under the 21st-century economy.

Fasina said this in Ado Ekiti, the state capital on Wednesday at a capacity building workshop organised by the management for FUOYE academic staff.

The don at the event officially unveiled the university’s research document policy that would serve as a compass for academic staff and show the pathway to greatness in the areas of innovation and radical development of the institution and the country at large.

Fasina said the workshop was conceptualised to broaden the staff’s horizons, on how best to run a university system for effective research and academic work under a modern economy.

Fasina said, “Let me say this, any university without research policy is dead. We are sharpening our research policy and this is going to be an annual event because we believe so much in research as an institution.

“As scholars, we must place a high priority on research. Our staff are being nominated for TETFUND overseas studies and this will help our quest for research.”

Speaking further on why the university is focusing attention on research policy, Fasina said: “We have not done so well in the past three years in the area of research. Let me announce to you that one of our lecturers just won N20 million worth TETFund research and that is why we are trying to encourage our staff.

“We will go beyond N100 million set by my predecessor annually. FUOYE Senate research fund worth N200 or N300 million will be set aside, it can even be a revolving fund for our academic staff. We can put our research outputs for patent investment to generate more IGR.”

On the stability being witnessed on campus, the VC said: “When you take care of your staff, they will surely cooperate with you. Right now, we have started our Part-Time programmes with over 2,000 students. All our lecturers will be involved and they will be paid something. It is only when you motivate that you can innovate”.

Fasina added that the university has paid a hazard allowance worth N123 million to members of staff, aside from the N33 million early disbursed while still targeting a sum of N41 million to be paid by December.

“We came 5th in the recent ranking done for Nigerian universities even beating those great universities and this was as a result of the stable academic calendar, leadership and new courses. Our Faculty of Medicine will soon start operation and a Professor of Medicine, Prof Patrick Adegun is coming to set up the faculty for us.”

He said the university is also building more classrooms and lecture theatres to accommodate the increasing students’ population in the institution.

At the workshop, the former Vice-Chancellor, Federal University, Akure(FUTA) and world-class researcher, Professor Biyi Daramola, spoke on the importance of research, benefits and significance to a university system.
