Beans are well-known for their ability to cause flatulence (farting) because beans contain a particular type of sugar (oligosaccharide) that the human body cannot break down fully. Oligosaccharides are large molecules and are not broken down and absorbed in the same way that other sugars are, by the normal digestive process that takes place in the small intestine. This is because the human body actually does not produce the enzyme that breaks down oligosaccharides. It is the bacteria in the large intestine that finally breaks down these sugars. Doing so causes fermentation and the production of gas that we release as flatulence. One of the ways to reduce farting after eating beans is to drink a lot of water about 30 minutes before eating the beans. Another well- known and effective traditional way of reducing the flatulence is to add gari to the beans before consumption.
