The family of a slain police constable, Emmanuel Gene, who was feared killed by suspected land grabber has accused the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force of abandoning them since their son went missing in 2020.
The late Emmanuel joined the force in 2018 and was drafted for an operation at Aba Titun in Ijebu Igbo ,less than two years in service.
It was gathered that the then Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ijebu Igbo SP Kazeem Solotan drafted the late Emmanuel as part f the team .
It was further gathered that the police team had just arrived at the scene of the reported disturbance, when they were attacked by armed hoodlums who had stationed themselves at the scene.
The late police officer ran away from other policemen and had been missing since December 2020 .
Father of the late police officer, chief Ruben Gene decried the fate of the family in the hands of the police, who according to him abandoned them.
He noted that the police had not come out to say how hos son went missing ,despite the available facts that the then DPO drafted him for an operation.
He also lamented that the police recovered the phone ,bag and the gun that were with the deceased officer ,when he was last seen
Chief Gene said that despite the judgment of an Industrial Court, which ordered that the police should compensate the family ,there had not been anything received from the police/
He said “Five days after my son went missing ,the then DPO called his wife and handed over his bag ,phone to her. He also disclosed that the police had recovered the gun, which my son was carrying, when they were attacked.
“The National Industrial Court even gave a judgement in our favour and ordered the police to compensate us but the police abandoned us.
“The wife and his children are being left to suffer. We don’t know who is receiving his salary. The wife now hawks commodities to survive.
“The police should come out and tell is that our son is dead . One of the policemen already told us that they were drafted to a scene of land dispute.
“They should also comply with the order of the court to compensate us so that the wife and children that he left behind will not suffer in vain.”
