As part of its efforts to ensure a safe environment, Sokoto State government has urged the Adolescent Girls Initiative Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) to extend the economic tree-planting exercise to other schools.
The state Commissioner for Basic and Junior secondary school, Tukur Alkali, stated this on Tuesday during the flag-off of the program at Nana Girls Secondary School, Sokoto.
The commissioner urged students of the school to nurture the trees and ensure their survival.
The commissioner who was represented by the Director of Administration, Alh Abubakar Salame, described the tree planting as a noble process to ensure a safer society especially in Schools.
While calling on AGILE to extend the gesture to other schools in the state, the Commissioner assured that the ministry will monitor the trees to ensure it achieves its purpose.
Speaking in his remarks, the project coordinator of AGILE.in the state, Dr Mansur Buhari, said the tree planting is one of the many programmes expected to be initiated in the schools.
He said the tree planting tagged, Launching of Eco Club and Tree Planting for Climate action” was designed to promote healthy and safer environment.
“This is why we ensure we plant more of economic tress so that it will serve several purpose.
“We decided to take this project to school so as to encourage these our students on how to nurture trees from this level till it gets to maturity.
“They will nurture it and and make sure they give them water properly” he added.
Also speaking, the permanent secretary, ministry of environment, Allhaji Mustapha Alkali, assured that the ministry will through its monitoring team ensure their survivals
He said the ministry as part of its mandate is ready to collaborate any individual or agency that is ready to key into tree planting initiative of the state government
Meanwhile, the school principal of Nana Girls Secondary School, Hajia Shafa’atu Musa Gunmi, has expressed gratitude to AGILE for choosing the school to launch the Eco Club tree planting in the state among other schools.
She, however, assure that the school will protect and nurture the trees to achieve its purpose.
Other speakers include the state commissioner for women and children affairs, Hajia Hadiza Shagari, called on the students of the school to protect the trees for their benefits and benefits of other students coming behind.
She appealed to them to continue to protect government facilities in the best interest of the state.
Environmental Specialist Officer of the project, Chika Sani Tureta, also highlighted some of the importance of tree planting to the students.
