A 45-year-old estate agent, Akeem Odejide, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly obtaining N200,000 with the intent of getting accommodation.
Odejide, who lives at Ogun, is being tried for obtaining money under false pretences and stealing.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Emmanuel Ajayi told the court that the defendant committed the offences in Dec. 17, 2019, at Ilupeju, Lagos.
He said that the defendant obtained the money from Mrs Agatha Amata under the pretext of getting accommodation for the children of one of her employee who is late.
“After the defendant collected the money, he was nowhere to be found.
“Efforts made by the complainant to get the apartment or retrieve the money proved unsuccessful as the defendant refused to pick her calls.
“The defendant was later apprehended and handed over to the police,” the prosecutor said.
The alleged offences, Ajayi said, contravened sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes three years’ jail term for stealing, while Section 314 attracts 15 years for obtaining money under false pretence.
Following his plea of not guilty, Magistrate Mrs O.O Fagbohun released the defendant on bail of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Fagbohun said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The magistrate fixed a further hearing for March 16.
