Protests rocked the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city on Wednesday when people marched round the city to mark the one year anniversary of the #ENDSARS protest which took place on this day last year.
Recall that, last year many young Nigerians took to the streets across the country protesting and calling for the disbandment of the Nigeria Police wing known as SARS, the protests got bloody and lives were lost.
The protest today to mark the anniversary started at the National Assembly but the protesters were denied access and chased away by the police and other security operatives.
The protesters thereafter, moved round the town peacefully, singing songs of solidarity, and later gather at the Unity Fountain.
Human rights activist, Omoleye Sowore who spoke to pressmen said: “We were stopped from gaining access to National Assembly but we went round the town for advocacy, we will gather here by 5 pm for a candlelight procession.
“The police officer who stopped us, one Ben Igwe, got a call from the Speaker of the House of Representatives that he should flush us away but I can tell you, people, that a revolution is coming that the army and police cannot stop. We cannot allow the death of those who died last year protesting against police brutality to go in vain.” He promised.
Earlier one Adamu Kabiru who lead a group of young men carrying placards with wordings like “Lekky tollgate was a hoax” and “#ENDSARS was insurrection” said he is the spokesperson of Vanguard for Justice spoke to Nigerian Tribune on why he embarked on the counter-protest.
According to Kabiru “Sowore who is leading people to protest has two passports and his family is abroad, he wants to destroy our country and run but we have no other country to run to.
“Nobody lost his or her life in the Lekky tollgate situation, it is foreign countries that want to destroy our country, during the #ENDSARS protests, you could see that they were getting foreign sponsorship, after protesting today they will still get grants,” he ended.
