In a bid to empower children with career knowledge and foster informed decision-making, a Sokoto-based educationist, Hajiya Shakira Na’allah has launched a community service initiative aimed at addressing the widespread practice of parents solely dictating career choices for their children.
Speaking on her motivation, Na’allah emphasized that her commitment to giving back to the community inspired the initiative.
“As a member of the Nasrul-Lahi-Li-Fathi Society of Nigeria (NASFAT), I have observed a gap where many young people lack the confidence to voice their aspirations. My goal is to encourage parents to guide, rather than impose, career paths on their children,” she explained.
At the event, Dr. Abubakar Boyi Sifawa presented a paper titled Empowering Future Careers: Strategies for Parents to Guide Children.
He discussed the critical developmental milestones of children aged 5 to 9, a stage referred to as “middle childhood,” marked by significant physical, cognitive, and emotional growth.
He further noted that Sokoto culture traditionally instils respect for elders, a strong emphasis on education, and community involvement, all of which play an essential role in shaping a child’s future.
Adding her perspective, Hajiya Habiba Muhammad, Deputy Commandant of Hisbah Sokoto, addressed the importance of emotional intelligence in parenting. She reminded parents of their responsibility to nurture their children as a divine trust and to raise them with integrity and sound values.
“Hisbah may be a newly inaugurated organization in Sokoto, but we are committed to sensitizing parents about effective parenting strategies, including emotional management, to ensure holistic child development,” Muhammad stated.
The Chief Imam of NASFAT Juma’at Mosque, Imam Miftaudeen Alani, commended the organizers for their efforts and expressed NASFAT’s willingness to support similar initiatives in the future.
The event highlighted the importance of collaboration between religious, cultural, and community leaders in fostering a generation equipped with both moral and professional guidance
