The candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 presidential election, Barr Adewole Adebayo, has described the dissolution of local government councils by some newly elected state governors as an unconstitutional and undemocratic action.
The Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang had recently approved the removal of the 17 Local Government Areas structures in the state.
Reacting, Adebayo decried the situation where elected governors are whimsically dissolving the local government councils they met on ground, describing it as grossly illegal and undemocratic.
He argued that the electorate voted in the national, state and local government elections as their representatives in government.
He said, “It is the same electorate that voted in the national, state and local government elections. All are sacred. The Plateau State Governor, and other despots should promptly restore the dissolved local government councils in compliance with the Supreme Court’s judgement in Yantaba vs Governor of Katsina State (2022) 1 NWLR PT. 1811 AT 259, and other Supreme Court’s judgements enforcing section 7(1) of the Constitution.”
