The Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Danbatta, has invited international telecom companies and potential investors to seize the opportunities presented by Nigeria’s population of over 200 million people and invest in the country’s telecom sector, particularly in broadband infrastructure provisioning.
Danbatta made this statement during the inaugural edition of the Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX) 2023, held in Marrakesh, Morocco. He highlighted that Nigeria offers stable political and economic conditions, making it an attractive investment destination in Africa.
Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Nigeria’s Ambassador to Morocco, Mansur Bamalli, also praised the regulatory prowess of the NCC and commended the Commission for positioning Nigeria as a prime investment destination in Africa.
At the event, Danbatta, represented by Babagana Digima, the Team Lead of the Nigeria Office for Developing the Indigenous Telecom Sector (NODITS), emphasized the NCC’s mandate to facilitate the development of the Nigerian telecom industry and encouraged foreign investors to contribute to the country’s economic growth.
Danbatta informed global stakeholders that the Nigerian government has been supportive of the telecom industry, which has experienced substantial growth with over 220 million active mobile voice subscriptions, over 150 million Internet subscriptions, and a 48% broadband penetration rate. However, there is still significant potential for further investment, as the country aims to achieve 70% broadband penetration by 2025.
The EVC highlighted that the telecom sector in Nigeria has become a major contributor to the country’s GDP, driving the growth of the digital economy. He emphasized the importance of the GITEX Africa 2023 event in showcasing the NCC as a leading telecom regulator and facilitating much-needed investment in the Nigerian telecom industry.
Danbatta also emphasized the abundance of talent in Nigeria that investors can tap into for their business operations. He stated that Nigeria has ample human resources waiting to be harnessed for global technological innovations and digital solutions.
“The Commission has sponsored three indigenous start-ups that are at this event to display their solutions for prospective investors and partnerships,” he added.
GITEX Africa 2023 marked the inaugural edition of the GITEX Global Summit held in Africa. The event aimed to be a platform for showcasing the potential of the tech-driven digital economy and fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors.
