The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Aderemi Adeoye, who coordinates operations of the police mobile force across the South East, has advised policemen to defend themselves against further attacks and killings in the zone by unknown gunmen.
Adeoye made the call at police headquarters, Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, on Tuesday while addressing special mobile policemen from different parts of the country deployed to the state for operation restore peace exercise of the police force.
Adeoye lauded the special mobile policemen for the gallantry which he said led to the end of the killing of security agents and destruction of government facilities by unknown gunmen.
He, however, commended the Inspector-General of Police for initiating Operation Restore Peace and assured the policemen that their welfare would not be toyed with by the police force.
“You have been on ground and you have done us proud by your discipline, dedication and commitment. You have raised the flag of the Nigeria Police high; you have restored the confidence in the ability of the police to protect lives and property.
“You laid your lives on the line to protect the citizenry; it is the highest call and we are proud, you and I, to be in this uniform.
“I have come to identify and empathize with you. Some of our colleagues have lost their lives and some have been injured in the course of this national assignment and we shall never abandon them to their fate.
“Those who have lost their lives, unfortunately, the force will ensure their benefits are processed and their relations get some succour from the police insurance scheme. Do not be discouraged, do not be demoralised. I want you to sustain the attitude of discipline.
“The constitution provides our mandates and the constitution is the supreme law of the land. Do not look at faces, do not be deterred by emotions and sentiments, just be true and loyal to the constitution and when Nigeria is at peace, all of us will be at peace.
“Defend yourselves against any attack, defend yourselves. The Inspector-General of Police has given you clear orders. You are not to lose your lives under any flimsy reasons or excuses. Defend yourselves with the capacity the government has given you. Protect lives and property, respect the fundamental human rights of the citizenry.
“Anyone who picks up a weapon to attack you or to attack government institutions has forfeited his fundamental human rights. But for the citizenry, you have a duty to protect them, you have a duty to assist them and you have a duty to respect their rights. Do not become a terror to the communities but do your jobs robustly, secure your mandate and let no criminal take the life of any of you, defend yourselves,” he said.
