Anambra Civil Society Network (ACSONET), citizens and nonstate actors stakeholders platform, on Tuesday, appealed to the state governor, Charles Soludo to conduct local government election within the next year.
ACSONET leader, Prince Chris Azor, who stated this in a congratulatory message to the governor who recently celebrated his one year in office, stressed that the conduct of the council poll will make him a jinx breaker and trailblazer since the last local government election was conducted in January 2014.
According to the group, granted that the Local Government structure is not perfect, he could equally restructure it for the better because it would be valued as the Igbo nations were naturally attached to their communities.
The group also praised the governor for his achievements in security and road infrastructure having begun construction of over 260 kilometres of roads across the State.
“You are no doubt making inroads in security architecture by taking the “war” to the miscreants, through the kinetic and non-kinetic approaches. However, we dare say that the real non-kinetic approach should be exemplified in Social Security (social protection). There’s an imperative need for a Social Protection Policy in the State, to collectively tackle abject poverty, and reinvigorate wellness and well-being. You promised to prioritize open governance.
“This requires intentional and conscious partnership with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Non-State actors (NGOs etc). President Obasanjo alluded to this in his comments at the anniversary event. Partnership and synergy with Organized Civil Society are key to envisaged growth and development.
“There’s also a need to institutionalize improved service delivery in the system. SERVICOM, a service delivery compact with Nigerians operational at the federal level needs to be domesticated in our MDAs. It was recently cascaded, through the office of the Head of Service, but is yet to be activated.
“Improved Service Delivery is the sure way to attract investments and boost ease of doing business in the state,” the group added.
