Catholics in Bauchi Catholic Diocese joined their counterparts across the world to observe the Ash Wednesday which signifies the beginning of the 40 days lent period before crucifixion and rise of Jesus Christ.
The Catholics also wore black clothes or black bands as directed by the National Secretariat of the Catholic in the mood of prayer for the souls of all Christians killed in the ongoing insurgency ravaging the North-East region as well as other criminal acts across the country.
In his sermon during the three masses observed to mark the day, the Bishop of Bauchi Catholic Diocese, Hillary Dachelem stressed the importance of peace and peaceful coexistence in the country because according to him, Christ died for all.

The Clergyman further said that though the security situation in the country is challenging and threatening, Christians need to remain resolute, committed to prayers and faithful to God for divine intervention.
He also admonished them to use the 40 days lent period to engage in supplication to God and seek His face in order to heal the country and direct the leaders unto the right path so that peace will reign in the country.
Hilary Dachelem also stressed the need for the church in Nigeria to remain united in order to be able to fight for the just cause of living together peacefully irrespective of the religious and ethnic differences.
