EVEN with intermittent breaks of rainfall, the heat in recent times has been quite on the high side. It is no strange fact then that more women are going for the weave option. They not only add a sophisticated pop to your general outlook, they are easier to carry, as they require little or no extra styling on a daily basis and keep the heat at bay.
With the increase in prices of hair extensions, it is only expected that more women would require tips for ensuring that Ghana weave styles produce lasting results. Makeover spoke to hair Stylists, who offered their expertise on how to make Ghana weaves last longer.
Choose the right stylist
When it comes to Ghana weaving, the first and most important rule, according to Sola Adedeji of Hairs4All Beauty Salon, is to choose the right stylist.
“It is one thing to know all it takes to make your Ghana weaving style last longer, but if the hair isn’t made right in the first instance, it is simply a waste of time. It is very important to be sure that you can vouch for the person’s work before you let such person touch your hair. A very good stylist knows just how to weave the hair that will minimise breakage to the minimum, and also make it last longer.”
Don’t scratch
This is one of the easiest ways to make the hair untidy. Avoid scratching your hair as much as possible. Instead, invest in quality antibacterial spray that will kill off bacteria in the hair. There are also mixtures you can make to spray on the hair to reduce the risk of itching. Ask your stylist for the best options available.
Keep your hair from water
This is the best time to invest in quality shower caps that you should carry with you everywhere if you want to reap the full value of your Ghana weave. As much as possible prevent, water from getting into your hair. If it happens that you get caught in rain, make sure you blow-dry your hair as soon as possible to ensure it doesn’t get rough. And when you feel your hair starts to look dry, use a moisturiser to give it shine.
Protect your hair while asleep
When you sleep with your hair unprotected, you are deliberately exposing it to getting rough sooner than necessary. Even hair nets are not advisable for Ghana weaves. Instead, wrap your hair in a lightweight scarf – so air can get through – and your hair will look as good as new the next morning.
Get a trim after a while
When you follow the tips religiously, after a few weeks, the hair might start to look untidy, with strands peeking out in various lines. At this time, visit your stylist for a trim. It is better to visit a stylist for a trim, rather than do this yourself, else, you run the risk of trimming off your own hair as well.
