Building more functional hospitals

Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole

Infrastructural development can be described as the core responsibility of any serious nation. This norm has been seen displayed time and time again. But in Nigeria today, the reverse is the case. In Lagos as in other parts of the country, it has become a sad observation that citizens in virtually all the states in the country do not have access to appropriate healthcare facilities. It is disturbing and should be addressed as soon as possible.

Many citizens cannot boast of being able to fund their health problems. In cases when they can, the facilities are not there. There are no drugs; the medical personnel are hardly on hand to attend to the teeming population of the sick and dying who throng these hospitals.

In most cases, I have observed that where there are personnel, the equipment to work with are not there. The governments at all levels should rise to the occasion and create a conducive environment so as to bring in private investors into the healthcare sector. The time to do that is now and the various governments should not shy from this.

We must fight against infant mortality. There should be healthcare in rural settlements. This is imperative and should be taken seriously.
