The Borno Network of Civil Society Organisations has launched an Artificial Intelligence (AI) application to track government spending and budget implementation in the state.
The Executive Director of the Network, Bulama Abiso, unveiled the AI app during the organisation’s annual congress in Maiduguri on Thursday, noting that the tool is designed to promote transparency and accountability in governance.
According to Abiso, the AI tool is part of the network’s Delivery Service Unit (DSU) that will track government budgets and their impact on the people.
He explained that the tool is a game-changer in ensuring accountability and checkmating the mismanagement of public resources in the state.
“The ultimate goal is to develop a robust plan and strategy that benefits the grassroots community,” Abiso said. “The app will enhance civic engagement, improve service delivery, and reduce corruption.”
Abiso called on all civil society organisations, including non-governmental organisations (NGOs), to ensure that their activities align with the state’s 25-Year Development Plan. “Each organisation will report on its activities, enabling tracking and alignment with the 25-year development plan,” he said.
“We expect all humanitarian and developmental organisations to align their programmes with the government’s 25-year development plan for success and state development,” Abiso added.
The AI app, according to Abiso, empowers citizens to hold their leaders accountable and demand better services. He noted that the app will enable citizens to monitor government spending, projects, and policies, ensuring that public funds are utilised effectively.
The congress, Abiso said, aims to deliberate on achievements, identify areas for improvement, and review policies to strengthen the network. He added that it also equips local organisations to reach marginalised communities, leveraging their knowledge of geography, language, and culture.
The app allows real-time monitoring of government expenditures, updates on ongoing projects and their impact, and enables citizens to report on service delivery and governance issues.
