Asaba Killing: Okowa calls for probe, sues for peace

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has called on the police to launch a thorough investigation into the alleged gruesome killing of a trader by a police officer in Asaba.

Inspector Ebri Ubi has already been arrested for shooting the trader, Mr Onyeka Ibe of the popular Ogbogonogo market in Asaba while on stop and search duty along Ugbolu-Illah road, Oshimili north local government area of Delta State over arguments of N100 gratification on Wednesday.

In a statement by the Chief Press Secretary, Mr Olisa Ifeajika in Asaba, the governor decried the shooting of the deceased even as he sued for calm, appealing to residents not to take laws into their hands.

He advised residents especially traders, to go about their normal businesses and remain law-abiding, assuring that the law will take its course on the incident after a thorough investigation by the police.

As the news of the incident filtered into the Ogbogonogo market, traders protested at the police headquarters and demanded for justice.

They described the killing of their colleague as barbaric.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ari Muhammed Ali who expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased however noted that the force, being a disciplined organization, would not condone such cruel action by any policeman assuring that the offending officer will be subjected to internal disciplinary measures, including criminal prosecution.

He, therefore, appealed to members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring them justice will not just be done but will be seen to have been done.
