As a married woman, would you hire a female maid?

Some couples, due to work, babysitting, or health issues, engage housemaids to help with some chores at home. In most cases, these maids are usually women — married or unmarried. While some married women do not mind hiring female maids in the house with their husbands around, others do. This inspired our topic for today. JOEL OKOEGUALE assisted in sourcing responses to this matter. Below are some of the responses from our contributors:

Tosin Awoniyi

No. I would not be comfortable having a mature female housemaid at home with my husband. It is risky. When one is not at home, she could do and undo (she could do the unexpected by seducing or snatching one’s husband). Besides, why employ a maid in the first instance? There are no house chores that I cannot do because I am a strong woman.

Erha Paul

I do not see anything wrong with it. The society has become so corrupt that anything and everything is viewed negatively. Before embarking on such a thing, you should have known your spouse’s faithfulness. And, you should as well know the maid better.

Oluwagbemiga Alana

There is no watertight answer to this. However, you should understand your partner’s sexual drive and orientation, his body preference, and his values before you make the decision. Do not hire a Delilah as a housemaid to a Samson, or an Anita as a maid in Davido’s house.

Sonia Etoniru

I would not be comfortable having a mature female maid. This is because I am a jealous person and any small thing could make me overthink. So, to avoid that, let me and my husband be together alone.

Louis Adebola

I see nothing wrong with it. It is good, as it helps to relieve the stress of doing housework. Having a housemaid brings comfort. It is okay by me.

Abiodun Famuyiwa

Why should you have a housemaid, whether male or female, if not for sheer laziness?

Egunjobi Abiodun

It is a No. There is a Bible passage that says “…lead us not into temptation and deliver us from evil.” I could accept it if the person comes and goes from time to time.

Roseline Michael

It depends on how much I trust my husband and my ability to close the gap between my husband and the female maid. There are certain things I would not allow the lady to do for my husband, such as cooking and serving his food, washing his clothes and boxers, opening the door for him when he returns from work, etc. The risk is 50 per cent.

Francis Ojile

No is the answer. Instead, ask him for a second wife if his demands are too much for you — and, he might just agree. Otherwise, manage your home your way.

Great Chika

I would say No. Temptation is everywhere, whether it is a mature or an immature woman. I would prefer to bring a family niece or a sister as an assistance for my children. If possible, I would train her as my child too.

Kehinde Adedeji

If I completely trust my husband, I would feel comfortable having a female maid. Trust is essential in any relationship. As long as there is open communication and clear boundaries, I would not see an issue with this arrangement.

Abiodun Oluwakanyinsola

No. Just no. My husband and I would take care of the house and our home.

Rejoice Oluwafemi

This decision is personal and depends on various factors such as trust, privacy, and cultural considerations. It is important to have open and honest communication with my husband to ensure that both of our perspectives and concerns are taken into account when making this decision.

Temitope Fagbohun

Having a stranger, someone I do not know their history, come into my home is something I cannot take. We have heard stories of how housemaids could be wicked and cause harm to one’s home. So, I would rather do my work myself than to invite a maid to my home.

Grace Ken

My comfort depends on how the housemaid handles herself. If she has respect, I would be comfortable. If not, then I would not be comfortable.

Susanna Ilori

First, the early years of marriage should not feature any third party. It should be just for the couple, let them enjoy themselves. Why do they need a housemaid? On the other hand, trusting your husband with a mature female maid is as good as trusting yourself with a male maid. If you think it would not be good for you to handle as a woman then you should not tempt your husband with the same. If you trust your husband enough to handle it, then you could if you need a maid. I would just employ someone who would be coming three times in a week.

Iyamolere Deborah

No. Nobody could be trusted. We are all humans. nything bad could happen at anytime.

Jolade Micheal

It is okay by me. Anything to ease my stress. As time goes by, there will be more responsibilities — especially, when we have children. So, it is an idea I would gladly embrace.

Rahab Balogun

Yes, I would, as long as we have no trust issues and he has the fear of God in him.

Akindiya Oyindamola

I would not. I would rather have someone that would come twice in a week to do general cleaning, only when I am at home.
