Senator representing Niger East in the National Assembly, Senator Sani Musa, has said the national secretariat of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) should be able to commit those holding elective offices under its platform to fulfilment of the party manifesto.
Senator Musa said such an undertaking would ensure that governors, lawmakers make conscious efforts to fulfil the promises they made to Nigerians.
The aspirant spoke, on Thursday, in Abuja at the annual APC Press Corps event which had eight other aspirants for the National Chairman of the party in attendance.
Senator Musa said the National Working Committee of the APC under his watch would ensure fidelity to the party manifesto, guidelines and Constitution.
He said: “You are all living witnesses in this country that all political structures have been reduced to only mere platforms used to attain leadership. ‘That trajectory is not good for us, it has not given us what is desired. Previous speakers have spoken and it’s in tandem and in line with my aspiration that we need a change of direction. We need to reorganize and reposition our party to the level that we can call an institution.
“In so doing, if we make our party, an institution whereby it will be governed by the books, the trajectory should be that we should have a Constitution that we will be abiding by. If you’re a leader, if you are an aspirant, if you are elected to an office, you should know that there is a book, there is a Constitution that we must stand and abide by it. The guidelines of the party are there, the manifesto of the party is there. If you are elected under the platform of this party, there is no way you shouldn’t abide by the book that this party has created. Because before you even become a member of this party you must have agreed to the tenets and the ethics of conduct that the party has laid down and say, “is this is my aspiration.
“When I said I would be adaptive to participatory and affirmative work style, that will usher visionary and perfect leadership of this party, what I mean by that is that APC must be an institution, which is the only antidote to the reckless disabuse of office and ethics which brings about disharmony and wrangling. We must bring reform and that form of reform we are going to bring his true reconciliation, true reorganization and the redirection of our manifesto. ”
In his presentation, the former governor of Zamfara State, Abdulazeez Yari, said restoration of internal democracy would be given immediate priority if elected as national chairman.
Yari who was former Chairman of the forum of 36 states governors, the Nigerian Governors’ Forum said he was aware
of the enormous power of serving governors and their mindset, however, assured that he would seek for moderation by reaching out to sitting governors not to isolate other stakeholders in their respective states.
“The issue of domination, of course, Governors must dominate the party. Why? Because they are the Alpha and the Omega and they are the financers but we have to change the narrative. Governors, President are members of the party and they have their own card numbers as other members. In bringing the members together, we are sharing the same opportunities, only that you are given the opportunity to serve you as a governor, as Senator, House of Representatives, House of Assembly, respectively. So, therefore, if we change the narrative and give members of the party, at least a certain direction on the issue of critical importance, then that narrative can be changed.
“I know as a governor who served for eight years, I can hear from the background that we dominate. Now, I am outside, I’m listening together with outsiders that Governors dominate. So this is very correct but if we agree with all of us because no single chairman, either from State or the National can do that alone. We have to all of us agreed about the responsibility as a working committee to sit down and define the architecture on how our is going to look like beyond 2023.”
Former Nasarawa State governor and Senator representing Nasarawa Central, Tanko Al-Makura said he would promote justice and fairness in the APC.
“The challenge is the sacrifices, people have been able to make over this period of time. I think there couldn’t be a better way to get this party properly positioned more than someone that has been with the party right from the beginning and has gone across the board to know what needs to be done and whatnot. By the special grace of God, if I become the National Chairman, I would ensure justice, ensure fairness and I will ensure a level playing field for everybody and ensure also internal party democracy and reward system.”
Former Borno State governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, who was represented by Honourable Cairo Ojougboh said his leadership would create a sense of belonging for all party faithful.
