The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 11, Osogbo, Mr Oshodi Agboola, on Tuesday, warned officers and men of the Ondo State Police Command against torture and extra-judicial killings, saying no policeman in the has the right or authority to kill crime suspects.
Agboola who stated this in Akure, Ondo State capital while addressing officers and men of the Ondo police command at the state headquarters of the command, Alagbaka, Akure, described the act of torturing a suspect as an infringement against human rights irrespective of the offence of such suspects.
According to him, men of the state police command should always respect the right of every Nigerian, noting that this was the way they could change the negative public perception about the Nigerian Police.
The police boss said, “Don’t use force on anybody; you should protect the rights of Nigerians. Also you should avoid accidental discharge.
“I also want to warn you that you should not torture any suspect in your custody and you should also manage the information given to you.”
Apart from this, the police boss also advised men of the command against extra-judicial killing saying, “You’re to protect lives and not to kill.”
The AIG urged the officers to always be ready to carry out their primary duties of protecting lives and properties of the citizens of the country,
He urged them to be courageous whenever they were at work and ensure that criminals are flushed out from their various jurisdictions.
“Make sure you deal with criminals in your jurisdictions; you should know that if you give criminals peace criminals will give you trouble,” Agboola stated.
