We live in tough times. We live in the day and age where adversity is the norm. We live in a time characterized by misfortune, calamity and distress. These are indeed the times the Bible describes as the last days.
“BUT UNDERSTAND this, that in the last days will come (set in) perilous times of great stress and trouble [hard to deal with and hard to bear].” 2 Timothy 3.1 Amplified
Nobody is immune from adversity.
Adversity knows no barriers. It is a common thread that weaves through the fabric of virtually every person who has or is making great impact in life.
“Show me someone who has done something worthwhile, and I’ll show you someone who has overcome adversity.” Lou Holtz
Adversity can make or unmake us but we must resolve to always be the better at the end of the day.
“Hard times don’t create heroes. It is during the hard times when the “hero” within us is revealed.” Bob Riley
Our perspective of adversity is very important as it will determine how we will turn out.
“The most successful people see adversity not as a stumbling block, but as a stepping-stone to greatness.” Shawn Anchor
Adversity can become a school for us learn. We can learn by instruction or by destruction.
“In spite of discouragement and adversity, those who are happiest seem to have a way of learning from difficult times, becoming stronger, wiser and happier as a result.” Joseph B. Wirthlin
We live in tough times which demands we acquire necessary skills, aptitudes and strategies to not only survive but also to thrive.
“Today everyone faces mounting adversities, and these increasing demands on human capacity require us all to develop new capacity in the form of higher-level skills and accessible wisdom.” Paul G. Stoltz
Adversity is not palatable but it has its good side.
“If we never go through any valleys how will we know when we’ve reached a mountain top? How will we know if the mountain is even any good if all our lives we stay up on the mountain and never experience any valleys? I know we’d all like to avoid those “valleys” at all costs, but the most growth for anything happens during adversity.” Kim Bloomer
The way we turn out when adversity strikes will reveal the stuff we are really made of.
“If you fall to pieces in a crisis, there wasn’t much to you in the first place.” Proverbs 24.10 Message.
The amplified translation says “If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small.”
Adversity comes to us through different channels. The nature and the way adversity comes will determine how it will be dealt with. Adversity can be caused by misfortune, accident or calamity. It can also come as a result of negligence, carelessness, ignorance or as a result of not complying with specific laws or regulations. Sometimes adversity comes as result of government policies, bad governance or political instability. Insecurity, banditry, kidnapping and other societal vices make life a tough place to live in.
We shall continue next time by looking at adversity from the life of Joseph in the bible.
