THE Achievers University (AU) Owo, Ondo state, has introduced five unique Engineering programmes in the institution following the approval of the programmes by the National Universities Commission (NUC)
The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Samuel Ibiyemi, who disclosed this to newsmen in Owo, listed the five Engineering courses to include: Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering and Biomedical Engineering.
According to the vice chancellor, the introduction of the five courses which would run in the school in department of Electrical and information engineering and Mechatronics and life engineering, became imperative because of the shift in production process which is determined by the level of information technology.
Ibiyemi also explained that introduction of the courses was part of the university vision to be ranked among the best university in Africa and need to prepare for the 21st century saying “in order to be cost -effective, the 21st Century industries must be driven by 21st Century programmes”
Speaking about the uniqueness of these five engineering courses, the VC explained that many people die as result of lack of technology and hence the need to introduce Biomedical engineering which is a new programme in this part of the world.
He said “biomedical engineering involves training our students to design and be able to produce artificial human spare parts. This unique engineering programme is highly challenging for the 21st century industry especially in medicine”
He however said all the five courses will go a long way to permanently take the country out its present recession with the crop of graduates that would be turn out from the university saying we are turning out graduates who will be using tomorrows technology to fight today’s war.
He assured that the university will continue to introduce programmes that will maximally impact on the nations natural resources in addition to ensuring food security and technological development, saying “with the introduction of these courses in Achievers University, it is not going to be business as usual in engineering ”
Speaking on the requirements for the courses, Ibiyemi said candidates are required to have sat for the 2015/2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) with a minimum score as approved b NUC and JAMB while they must also obtain five credits in WAEC at not more two sittings which should include English, Mathematics Physics, chemistry.
He urged all interested candidates to download the forms online while the admission for all the five courses close on February 16, 2016.
