After having her leg amputated following a medical crisis as a diabetic, Omowumi Odekanle is still facing a dilemma as six months after her discharge, she still lives at the gate of the hospital following her inability to pay medical bills. YEJIDE GBENGA-OGUNDARE reports.
Life for 47-year-old Odekanle Omowumi took a downward trend when what should be a normal medical emergency for her as a diabetes patient led to a more complex issue. She was admitted into Wesley Guild Hospital in Osun State on March 2, 2016 with Hospital No: 250475.
During her treatment, her left leg was amputated on April 3, 2016 for complications from diabetes and her husband abandoned the responsibility of her treatment to her family, giving the excuse that he has enough on his plates caring for their four children.
The brother tried his best to meet her medical needs until she was discharged on June 21, 2016 after her surgical wounds were well healed but she had not left the hospital premises. Rather than leave for home, she became resident at the hospital gate which had become home for patients that are unable to pay their bills after discharge.
The brother who is a civil servant in Osun State had done all he could but is unable to raise the outstanding N264, 530..
Speaking to Nigerian Tribune, the brother, Orimogunje Oluwasanya, said, “due to financial constraint, we have been unable to settle the huge amount of hospital bill and she has been in the hospital premises for more than six months after she was discharged.
The outstanding money when broken down falls into diverse categories: accommodation N56, 000, nursing care N67, 200, feeding N84, 000, blood services N20, 000, operation N10,000, anesthesia N5300, emergency pack N8330, dressing N11, 200, physiotherapy N2500 totaling N264, 530
The family is asking for financial assistance from well-meaning Nigerians to enable them pay the bills and take their sister out of the hospital and reunite her with her children so she can lead a normal life.
