Crawford University, Igbesa, Ogun State, has graduated 24 first class graduates from the 2019/2020 session at its 12th convocation recently held on the institution’s campus.
It also produced another 135 and 128 graduates of the set who made Second Class Upper and Second Class Lower division, respectively.
Mr Damilare Kolawole who graduated with a Cumulative Gradient Point Average (CGPA) of 4.88 on a 5-point scale in Computer Science and Technology emerged the overall best and he was hugely rewarded for the effort.
Addressing the graduating students at the event, former executive secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and Chairman of Board of Trustees of the university, Professor Peter Okebukola, among other eminent scholars, urged them to be agents of positive change as they go into the world of work.
Okebukola said he believes that the quality knowledge and skills as well as virtues of good character imparted in them would greatly help them in their careers and other endeavours.
Also speaking, Managing Director, Niger Delta Exploration & Production Group, who was the Convocation Lecturer, Dr Francis Fatona, said the recent statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), showed evidence that the unemployment rate at the last quarter of 2020 would approach 30 per cent and that entrepreneurship was the only possible solution.
According to him, the entrepreneurship remains the more attractive option for all the new graduates, being the viable means to arrest and reverse the trend of the ever-increasing unemployment in our society.
“Entrepreneurs by the notion of who they are, have become some of the most powerful transformers and why not by extension should this be so for Nigeria and our youths,” he said.
In his address, university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Reuben Kolo, said the convocation was significant as it coincided with the university’s 15th anniversary, adding that the university since inception in 2005, had been striving hard to ensure that the great vision of its founding fathers was achieved.
“So, we have sustained our pride as a centre of excellence producing graduates with a balanced education of the mind, body and spirit to serve God and humanity.
“In this 12th convocation, we are launching a total of 313 graduands into the global market to make their mark in their various disciplines and other areas of endeavours,” he stated.
