2023: Resign if you want to contest elections, Akeredolu gives 48-hour ultimatum to aides

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has directed political appointees and other public servants aspiring for political offices in the state ahead of the 2023 election to resign before or on Thursday, 14th April 2022.

This was contained in a memo signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Oladunni Odu, and addressed to all political appointees in the state, saying all aspiring political appointees must resign within the next 48 hours.

Odu in the memo hinged the decision on the newly signed Electoral Act 2022.

According to her, the recent Electoral Act 2022, signed by President Muhammadu Buhari, provides that Political appointees and public servants aspiring to contest elections must resign their positions before the conduct of political party primaries.

The State Government Scribe said in a memo that “Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has given all Political office holders till Thursday, 14th April 2022 to resign from their offices if they will be contesting in the 2023 elections”

The Memo said: “As you are aware, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Gen Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) has signed the amended Electoral bill Into Law and the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) has released guidelines on the conduct of the impending general elections thereby signalling the commencement of intense political activities both at the Federal and State levels:

“Consequently, and In line with the provision of section 84 (12) of the electoral act, 2022.

“Political and public office holders desirous of participating in the political process either as a contestant for elective positions or as delegates should resign their appointments on or before Thursday. 14th April 2022.

“This is for your information and strict compliance, please.”
