World Bank earmarks over N19m projects in Enugu communities

SUCCOUR came to the Obodo Akpu and Aka Anwu Communities in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State yesterday following the doling out of the first tranche of over N2million naira cheque each from the Community and Social Development Agency (CSDA) to the leaders of the communities for the World Bank Assisted projects in the area.

The World Bank in collaboration with Enugu State Government through Enugu State Agency for Community and Social Development Agency earmarked over N19million to build Civic Centres, Skill acquisition centres, culverts in each of the two communities in the State.

Presenting separate cheques to the leaders of the communities, the General Manager of Community and Social Development Project (CSD), Dr Maximus Asogwa commended the state government for keying into the project, urging the benefiting communities to make judicious use of the funds.

Dr Asogwa said, “We are here to release the first tranche, being 30% of the over N9million earmarked for the projects. You should show seriousness and complete the Civic Centre in good time so as to commence work on the Skill Acquisition Centre and culvert.

“Our coming here is just to fulfil one of the things expected of the agency by the development partners and we assure you that once this Civic Center is completed, we will also commence work on your second demand which is a skill acquisition centre,” he said.

Dr Asogwa who also urged the community to build the Civic centre where it will be accessible to everyone called for transparency and accountability by members of the Community Project Management Committee (CPMC) in doing the project.

He stressed that the Agency will supervise every stage of the project to avoid complications.

“We commend the State government and the executive of the agency for community development and for remembering us in community development stride of the state. I thank the community for suspending their daily businesses today to welcome the CSDP members sent to our community by the state government. We are delighted to be one of the beneficiaries of this programme and promised to use whatever that will be given to us accordingly.

The traditional ruler of Aka Anwu, Igwe M. O Onuora, also lauded Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State for providing democracy dividends to communities across the state.

The Traditional Ruler described Governor Ugwuanyi as “a God Sent”.

Igwe Onuora further noted, “This is 3 years and development has entered every community, before the remaining 5 years Enugu will be better than London. CSDP has maintained the relationship between them, Aka-Anwu and state government by discharging their services properly. We will work in accordance with the directives of the agency.

In his speech, the Awgu Local Government Chairman, Stanley Okeke who was represented by his Head of Department, Works, Joel Agbo, promised that the local government will continue to support the state government in infrastructure development and also help the community to benefit from the state.

Earlier in the event, the Town Union President General, Okwudili Akputa while expressing happiness commended governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for his relentless work in the state.

Akputa who pleaded that the state government should remember them in any other developmental projects promised that the fund would be utilized accordingly.

The traditional ruler of the community, Igwe M. O Onuora lauded the State governor for demonstrating an exceptional favour to his community and promised to use the money properly and according to the directives of the agency.

Igwe Onuora assured the governor of their total support for his second tenure, stressing, ” it will make Enugu State look better than London’.

“I am very happy with what government is doing for us. My happiness doesn’t know any boundary. My community will support your second tenure come 2019 to complete your work”, he disclosed.
