Why Should we not Panic over the Coronavirus Mutation?

When Coronavirus first appeared, the whole world panicked over the diseases. However, this interest decreased gradually. Even the media is not devoting a large part of the news bulletins, and talk shows to the virus as it used to do in the early stages. Actually, this is very normal to anything new. This doesn’t mean scientists shouldn’t study the new virus variant. However, we cannot claim the new variants are more transmissible or more dangerous without taking the proper time to study them. After that, scientists can compare the old version with the new ones to know the differences. 

Moreover, an increase in the number of infected people doesn’t indicate that the virus variant is stronger or more contagious. Instead, it may be a result of human behaviour and a lack of following the public health rules. Actually, many scientists believe that even with mutations, people should do the same exact things to limit the spread of the virus. These include wearing face masks and social distancing. Now, you might be wondering, why shouldn’t we worry? Again, it is a pandemic we all suffered from. How can we make sure the new variant won’t cause similar or even more disasters like the old one?

Vaccines Work Against Mutations

Although this is not 100% confirmed, some studies do assure vaccines can affect the mutations. Vaccines work on weakening the virus. So, even with mutations, vaccines can still weaken the virus and decrease the symptoms. 

Mutations are Limited 

Virus mutations are not surprising to scientists. They all know any virus will mutate at some point. Mutations occur when the virus invades the human cell and replicates. The virus continues replicating one time after the other till a mutation occurs. The version with mutation starts competing with the other versions without mutations till one remains and transfers to another person. 

The same process occurs more and more. Yet, the combinations are limited. So, the number of mutations a virus can perform is not endless. Once scientists discover a mutation, they can work on this version as it will mostly remain for a while till another mutation occur. After a while, the virus will have performed all possible mutations, and thus, it becomes weaker. 

Vaccines are Developed Consistently 

As the virus mutates, scientists are developing vaccines to cope with the virus changes. Whenever they discover a variant of the virus, the vaccines’ producing companies start working on these variants. They work on boosting human immunity against the variant. So, vaccines can have the same effect on the mutated virus versions.
