People call you Honeypot, how do you feel answering a name that has a sensual meaning?
I get this question every time and perhaps one of the reasons I love the name Honeypot is because people raise eyebrows whenever they hear it and they remember anytime they see me. I have said it before and I am saying it again that God gave me the name Honeypot.
How did you receive such name from God?
I pray to God about almost everything I want to embark upon. When I was looking for a radio name, I prayed about it and I just read a novel and I found Honeypot in it. That was the first time I came across the word Honeypot, and it wasn’t anything sensual at all. The character used it in the context “this living room is the honeypot of the building” and so this writer was saying it’s the centre of attraction.
Do you know the meaning of the name?
I checked up the meaning and it was actually what he meant, I did not even see other meanings. If I had seen other meanings, maybe I wouldn’t have used the name at all. So the meaning of Honeypot is centre of attraction.
Centre of attraction?
Yes, somebody who is blessed to always be at the centre of good things. That is what Honeypot means.
There is a cliché that most beautiful women can’t stay with one man, how has your experience been with men?
I really don’t agree with the statement that no beautiful woman can stay with one man because I know that love still exists. If you really like that person and you are cool with the person, you don’t have any reason to change who you are. I know some ladies who put all their eggs in one basket and they are beautiful; they face who they are dealing with at that particular time. I see how fast we are losing our value and culture in this part of the world, but that does not change anything about me or how I feel about certain beliefs. I have met a lot of married men, but they will still come to ask you out.
How do you feel when married men ask you out?
Most times, I just wonder when I see things like that because some of them don’t wear rings and they look so young that you would be thinking that you could actually start something with them. This has happened to me before, and you will be disappointed later to discover that the guy is married.
So you don’t like dating married men?
I like it when some men tell you the truth about their marital status. Some of these young guys will shock you by telling you they’ve been married since 1952! So, most times, you see the married men pestering the single girls. Sometimes it is not the girls who really want the married men but they are pressured by the men. Most men mislead the single ladies, raising their hope towards marriage. I always tell people that there’s no reason to lie to any woman about your marital status, tell the lady the truth and wait for her decision.
You are one of the most popular on-air personalities in Lagos, how do you feel about those who say they are not broadcasters but on-air personalities (OAP)?
The experience has been great. I met someone at the future award last year and I said I’m a broadcaster and she said it has been a while she heard about me. I am a broadcaster because I am broad. I do all of these things with ease. It is not common to see someone who could do news and do entertainment at the same time. I am an all-rounder. I have been in the newsroom. I wrote my news, edited my news, and I still went on to read my news. I am that flexible. That is why I can say that I’m a broadcaster. Most people who read news are rigid; they might not be able to do entertainment. I would say that being an on-air personality is the mild part of it while a broadcaster is a flexible entertainer, who fits into different entertainment skills.
How has life been treating you?
Being a broadcaster, you can get carried away especially when you have passion for the job that you will forget about your personal life. That was why I had to leave Max FM and move on. Sometimes, you will discover that you don’t have a life any longer because you have a passion for your job, your head is calculating and creating and you just want to keep working. Unfortunately here in Nigeria, when you start working and doing some things just to make things go well, they place little or no value to them. They will keep giving you work to do and saying he or she likes to work and they don’t pay for it.
But is it true that you are too expensive?
This is very interesting. I don’t know how easy it will be to answer this question. I think it depends on the individual. This is showbiz. I do TV; it is like 95 per cent glamour all the time. You have to look good all the time. I am easy to maintain if you are rich. Just make sure I’m driving beautiful cars. I change clothes every time. I get to spend money every time because money is good. You will agree with me that money rules the world and makes it go round. I am not expensive, but as a man, you must be able to afford the things I want.
You are still single, when will Honeypot settle down or has it been hard finding true love because you seem to be expensive?
I am not married. I am yet to be married because I have not seen the person I could actually settle down with.
What kind of man are you looking for?
If I find the person and we are on the same page, I will settle down with him. If the person truly wants to be with me too, nothing will stop me. That’s the reason I’m not yet married and I’m looking forward to it very soon.
You are endowed. When one thinks of the other meaning of your name “Honeypot” there’s a picture that comes to mind. How have you been coping with the name?
Oh yeah! I am very blessed indeed because of the name I have chosen. But seriously, if I knew people would read another meaning to the name, I wouldn’t have used that name. But the thing is that there’s a serious part of me. I am not that slay queen, although you can call me slay queen because of the way I dress. Sometimes, I like to tease my fans and followers on the social media but I’m not an empty-headed woman.
So you don’t joke around with anybody?
My attitude to people depends on their approach to issues we discuss. I know how to put people in their place very well if they are rude.
So in view of your outward appearance, are you overburdened with the compliments that you are sexy?
If I understand the meaning of sexy well, it means sexually attracted. Somehow I see such compliment as offensive, but I feel people have come to accept it as a compliment. If it’s going to mean sexually attractive, I do not want it to be the first thing people see in me. When people see me, I like to be just beautiful, there is more to being a beautiful lady than seeing them as sexy.
What does feminism mean to you?
What I know is that what I understand about feminism is different from others’ definition of feminism. I believe that women should be treated well, equally. I hate discrimination, what I do not understand is why people are taking it to the extreme. People will say you cannot do this to your husband and you cannot do that to your husband. As a Christian, I must respect my husband, if I like, I could kneel down, it’s no one’s business. A woman shouldn’t be treated differently when it comes to appraisal, pay a good woman as well as a good man in the field of work, no discrimination.
Tell us about that experience you would never forget about love?
I was proposed to on a Valentine’s Day but the marriage did not happen. I know that there’s something about time that it has the capacity to heal all wounds. It’s my past, I don’t leave in my past. I have learnt to believe in myself. I have learnt how to understand people’s mind and decisions. I have learnt to believe in what I do and just focus.
What do you really want out of life as a woman and what sacrifice are you willing to pay for it?
What I want out of life as a woman is a purposeful life. I mean exhausting all my talents, helping people and affecting lives positively. These things mean so much to me. I would be fulfilled in life if I could do all of these.
