Former National Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers (NIEE), Engineer Bolarinwa Olowe, has urged Nigerian youths to pay attention to environmental degradation, which has led to climate change.
Olowe explained that Nigerians should make an effort to make the environment sustainable by engaging in activities that will make the land safe for the coming generations.
He said this on Monday during the Engineer Bolarinwa James Olowe Inaugural Inter-secondary Schools Competition for Schools in Oyo state held in honour of him at the University of Ibadan, Ibadan.
The event was part of the activities laid down in celebration of Environment Week and witnessed the participation of 15 secondary schools in Oyo state, who all spoke on the topic “Our Future, Our Land.”
While at the end of the public speaking competition, The Polytechnic High School, Ibadan, came first. Al-Qalam Schools came second, and An-Noor Model Islamic College came third during the competition.
Speaking on the topic “Our Land, Our Future,” Olowe stated that youths should proffer solutions on how to protect the environment and as well halt the degradation of the environment.
He said: “Our world today is facing serious degradation due to abuse that we have all subjected it to. This has led to aggravated climate change that is making the place very uncomfortable to live in.”
“It is, therefore, a gratifying and timely development that our young ones, who are the inheritors of the future and indeed our world, be called upon to give serious thoughts and proffer solutions on how we will protect the future of our land for the future and halt the degradation and protect our environment.
Speaking with Nigerian Tribune shortly after the event, The Chairman NIEE, Oyo state chapter, Dr Abdulwasiu Ajagbe noted that NIEE is celebrating Engr. Olowe during his lifetime with the public speaking competition because of his contributions so far to NIEE and the development of the environment in general.
“We can’t talk about NIEE, especially in Oyo State, without mentioning Engineer Bolarinwa Olowe. So, we thought we should celebrate him while alive and appreciate him for his contributions so far to the development of our environment, and as well encourage him to do more,“ he concluded.
